Petrochemicals

A report titled “The Future of Petrochemicals: Towards A More Sustainable Chemical Industry” by the International Energy Agency (IEA) explores the role and impact of petrochemicals in the global energy system and the environment. Petrochemicals are organic chemicals derived from oil and gas, such as plastics, fertilizers, detergents, synthetic fibers, and rubber. They are used in various sectors, such as construction, agriculture, health care, transportation, and electronics. Petrochemicals are one of the fastest-growing sources of energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for about 14% of global oil and 8% of global gas consumption in 2017. Petrochemicals can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by providing essential materials and services for various sectors and applications. However, they also need to address their environmental and social impacts, such as emissions, waste, health, and safety. With the advent of CCUS (Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage) technologies, petrochemical growth is quite sustainable rather robust.
